08: Design Concept

The house is located in a resort called Sotogrande which is in the South of Spain.

The original house was built in 2000 for a family with young children, by architect Joaquin Mier Enriquez. It had a Main House and Porch with a Garden and Pool Area. We were called in a few years later to add a Pool changing room with sauna, an outdoor glassed in dining room, a study, a Guest House and finally to re-design the kitchen area to turn it into a live-in kitchen.

The house itself has very Andalusian architecture, with terracotta floors, whitewashed walls and tiled roofs. We wanted the new sections of the house to blend into the existing so they would look like a unit rather than additions. The windows and doors are wood, but the new dining area has an iron and glass closing and a new porch covered in bamboo for shade.

The new bathrooms have cement colored tiles on the floors which were used at the beginning of the century and add a touch of color to contrast with the terracotta elsewhere, and the new kitchen has Portuguese glazed tiles on the walls, again to add color into the house.

Everything else was respected and is very Mediterranean and traditional.
