The thing about ceilings is that we need them! We expect them to be there, but we give them little thought when it really comes down to it. We think about the colour and light fittings and that is where it starts and stops. But in reality, ceilings act as more than a divider between floors, they can be, visually, very appealing.

In many renovations and extensions, a false ceiling is needed to cover wires and beams, so you can be left with an uneven surface. The best way to cover this up, is with a false ceiling. Some false ceilings are flat, others are in levels, depending on what they need to cover. it is worth remembering that depending on just how extensive the job is, it will also effect the cost. If you need a false ceiling, this would be the perfect time to reconsider lighting options, as they can be easily installed as part of the process.

Beautiful bathrooms

Bathrooms can be small and cramped, but with a redesign, such as this one, we can really make the most use of the space. Designed by DDWH Architects, this en-suite is now a state of the art bathroom. The false ceiling houses beautiful, hidden, mood lighting, which also adds an element of colour The lighting bounces off of the tiles in the shower to create an incredible iridescent effect. Thanks to the ceiling, this room looks amazing.

Feeling square

A false ceiling can become a bit more than a cover up job. If you look at this ceiling you can see that it has various elements that make it stand out. Lights sit behind the squares, causing the light to spill over the edges, giving the room a warm glow. Squares overlap oneanother and create a false ceiling that looks very contemporary.

Added texture

Creating a false ceiling adds many aspects to a living room, or any room really. It gives scope for added visual texture which makes the ceiling a part of the room, rather than something that you just ignore or barely notice. In this image the lights in the ceiling really bring a lot of light to the room and make it appear very  modern and bright, and this is the desired effect. The different shapes help the room stand out too.

Create something special

Having a false ceiling really lets you be creative. If you have an older house, you may already have decorative elements around the edges. A false ceiling allows for a certain amount of artistic freedom and you can put your own stamp on it. Mixing in some lovely coloured wooden fittings can lift the room to new heights. They highlight the false ceiling, drawing our eyes around the edge and to the centre. The contrasting wood and crisp white looks very good, but of course you can have any colour combination.

Modern living

False ceilings don't have to cover the whole of the roof. It can be part of it, as in this image, where we can see it runs around the edge. This creates a step effect and it works really well at making the room seem taller than it actually is. The recessed lights are all neatly hidden away and the lights beam down the wall, highlighting the very white elements of this room. The black rug helps the classic back and white theme come together.

A 3D effect

In this image, in particular we can see just how effective a false ceiling can be. The beamed ceiling above it has been left mostly exposed. The orange colour of the wood has been very cleverly mirrored in the colour of the tiles below it. It would have been a shame to cover up such a beautiful ceiling. Instead a false ceiling has been built around the edges, giving light and a lower ceiling where needed. This effect of different levels, creates an interesting room, and makes it very unique.

Elelements

False ceilings help create elements in a room. We can see from this room there s a mix of dark and light wood all through the design. These colours are echoed in the false ceiling and it helps ties the whole room together. The fact that a false ceiling can also add distinct levels, makes a room look much more interesting. You can add recessed lighting, or pendant lighting, or both… like here. The choices are yours and they are endless.

Renovation nation

We have fast become a nation that renovates. House prices in larger cities are phenomenal, which sometimes makes it cheaper to stay and renovate, than move and upgrade. We can give an internal facelift to really invigorate and change how a home feels. An old tired house can look like a brand new build with some effort. The false ceiling in this home is perfect for some bright lights to be embedded and to hide any wiring that they have. It looks modern and sleek.

Moden art

We love this room. The false ceiling has an Art Deco feel to it and it is almost a work of art to itself. This room is quite narrow, but if we take moment to look at what has been done here to make it look wider, a large part of that is down to the ceiling. The rectangles on top of each other act to lengthen  the room, with the angular one really helping. It is a small visual trick that really helps.

Keep it simple

We think we have shown many varieties of false ceiling ideas for you to look at. Some are quite intricate and only partial, others are the complete ceiling. You can always keep it simple , or just add the ceiling around the edges to allow you to have recessed lighting in place. This saves drilling holes in the existing plasterboard, as you just create a new ceiling where the lighting is going. It cuts down on mess and the cost of installing a whole new ceiling.

False ceilings can be installed for many reasons, sometimes it is just aesthetic, and other times it is for practical reasons. Whatever the reason, your ceiling can be both functional and look amazing.
