Hallways don't always get the love they deserve when we're designing and decorating our homes, in fact they often don't get any love at all. They can be seen as a functional necessity rather than a design opportunity, meaning we often completely fail to decorate them, and even worse they tend to become cluttered and messy as the default place to store anything we can't find a spot for. We're all guilty of these mistakes, but don't worry, today we're going to look at how to avoid them completely!

A good hallway should create a natural flow in your home. It should be light and bright, with plenty of room to move around, and clear from clutter that will have you stubbing your toe in the middle of the night. The hallway is a transition space between different rooms, so the decor should relate to the rest of your home, even if you choose to make it unique. So let's take a look at how our fabulous homify professionals have avoided making these needless mistakes so that you can too!

1. No coat or shoe rack

Because the entrance of every home tends to lead into a hallway this is an absolute must. The first thing most of us do when we enter our home is take our coat and shoes off, and if you've got nowhere to put them they tend to go on the floor, where they clutter the space and just beg to be tripped over. Make sure at the very least you have a coat rack, but a few extra compartments for you shoes and handbag will really make a difference.

2. No unified aesthetic

We often fail to decorate our hallways consistently with the rest of the home, in fact we often fail to decorate our hallways at all. Make sure that your hallway reflects the decor of the rest of the home and it will tie the whole aesthetic together. Here the rug continues the striped theme of the wallpaper, they have used one of the colours featured to paint the walls, and the result looks marvellous.

3. A lack of design ambition

While you may think feature pieces and decorations should be reserved for the living room, they can have a huge impact on the way your home is perceived. Don't be afraid to flex your creativity in the hallway like they have with this gorgeous river stone water feature!

4. No greenery

Because hallways are usually enclosed and often lack windows, you have to take extra steps to ensure there's plenty of fresh air so that they don't become stale and dank. One really effective way to do this is with plants; they purify the air, and fill your home with intoxicating aromas. Not only that but a little injection of lush greenery will really liven up the decor!

5. No mirror

Because hallways tend to be quite small they can feel dark and claustrophobic. To combat this hang a large mirror on the wall to increase your perception of the size of the space, plus it will reflect the light making sure your hallways is always bright and welcoming.

6. There's no console table

While there isn't always necessarily space for much furniture in every hallway, there's always enough room for a console table. This will help you immensely when it comes to decorating, they're perfect for those indoor plants we were talking about, or else displaying ornaments and decorations that will give your home personality and style.

7. Too much clutter

The main purpose of a hallway is to facilitate movement, but for some reason we often use it to store all sorts of junk we can't find any other place for. It's important that you're not always dodging excess furniture, boxes, or bicycles, so keep the hallway clear of any clutter or extraneous junk, and you'll ensure your home is tidy and safe.

8. Boring walls

Hallway walls provide the perfect opportunity for hanging artwork, family photos, and other decorations, so get creative and really decorate those walls. If you're really ambitious you can build recesses into the walls to hang art like they have here for a really special gallery vibe!

9. Inappropriate colour palette

Picking the right colour palette for your hallway is really important, if you go too dark it will suck the light out of the passage, while if you go too plain it will be boring and forgettable. Don't be afraid to use bold vibrant colours like they have in this stunning hallway, where the vivid green looks beautiful contrasted with the white details and glowing hardwood floor.

10. Not enough light

This is probably the most common mistake we make in the hallway, and it can be a real killer. Make sure that your hallway is really bright and welcoming with plenty of lights, and if you're in the design stages of a new home consider windows where possible, or skylights like in this wonderful corridor!

We're sure that every one of us has committed at least one of these mistakes, but now we know better we'll never make them again! For more helpful home tips check out this guide on cheap and easy home improvements!
