If you love to be on the cutting edge of fashion and home design, then listen up, because today we're going to show you the 7 home trends for 2017 that you absolutely need to know! The new year is the perfect time to make renovations, revamp your decor, or design your brand new home, so that you can start the year off right with a completely fresh start.

Being aware of these trends doesn't mean you have to follow them to a T, in fact as you'll see there's still a lot of variation and contrasting concepts at work this year, so there's bound to be something that speaks to you personally. What's more important here is gaining inspiration from new approaches that you may not have considered, and then applying that knowledge in your own specialised way. This is also just a great excuse to look at some of the most innovative work of our homify professionals, and recognise the tastemakers of 2016 for their influential work!

1. Frontier style

We may be looking forward to 2017, but one style that's going to make a big impact finds its inspiration deep in the past. Starting with a rustic base, we're talking those hearty unvarnished hardwood floors and timber rafters, the home is decorated in the style of the wild west, that means wagon wheels, apothecary bottles, and simple wooden furniture. This style is great for people who love a bit of DIY, as restored antique furniture will complement it perfectly.

2. Bold bright colours

It's important not to take yourself too seriously, and that's why in 2017 interior decorators are going to start letting their inner child run free with bold and vibrant colours that will lift the spirits and bring your home to life. Using a neutral base for your home like they have with the white walls and hardwood floors allows you to get a little bit more crazy with the furnishing and decoration, and really make a statement.

Pastels work especially well together, and while it's still important to be tasteful don't be shy about using multiple colours, as they've done here with this whimsical tritone decor.

3. Gallery walls

Gallery walls are a great way to express your personality, and add visual interest to your home. The images you choose to display are up to you, modern art and family photographs are always going to be favourites, but if you want to be really trendy vintage prints are going to be all the rage this year.

Note how they've coordinated the colours of the images with the rest of the room, with the yellow frames echoed in the sofa and throw, for a satisfyingly unified aesthetic.

4. Futuristic kitchens

One area of the home with its sights set firmly on the future is the kitchen, and we're excited. Taking its influence from science fiction films, you're going to see kitchens that look like they belong on a spaceship. This means sleek surfaces, curved furniture, flat panel cabinets, and stainless steel appliances combining for a look that's cool and modern.

This has a lot to do with framing the decor around advanced modern appliances, but as you can see here it's also just a matter of style and innovation.

5. Shabby chic isn't going anywhere

Shabby chic has been a favourite for a while now, but it's still gaining momentum, and in 2017 it's only going to become more popular. There's lots of reasons for this, but one of the main ones is that as we become more environmentally conscious we're increasingly aware of the value of recycling and reusing old furniture.

It's also a really fun and cost effective way to decorate your home, as you can pick up most of the pieces second hand and refurbish them yourself. Perhaps the biggest reason for its popularity though is it just look so charming!

6. Plenty of green

This is probably the easiest trend to replicate in your home, and it will also make the biggest difference to your wellbeing. The premise is simple; fit as many plants and flowers into your home as you possibly can! There's plenty of different ways to do this, such as pot plants and hanging pots, but one of our favourites is vertical gardens. By building planters into the wall you can completely cover the surface in lush greenery.

Plants purify the air and make your home smell fresh and clean, but they also add a vibrance and energy to the decor that can't be imitated.

7. Loft life

Lofts have never been so essential as they will be in 2017, and we think that's cause for celebration. Ever since industrial spaces started to be repurposed as residential areas, and stretched housing demand inspired developers to consider using the attics of their buildings, lofts have provided a cheap and cosy option on the housing market.

The benefits of lofts are they tend to come with pretty special views, they have a dynamic form that can really shape the decor of your home, and you never have to deal with the noise from that pesky upstairs neighbour! Beyond just using lofts as apartments, loft inspired additions to homes are also going to be a big factor, such as this mezzanine bed that is a wonderful space saving measure as well as a really endearing design feature.

Well now that you've got a head start on the trends for 2017 you can be sure that your home will be the talk of the town! We just can't wait for 2017 to roll around so that we can see what the professionals at homify have in store, but if you're already feeling a little bit nostalgic for the year just gone then check out our favourite houses from 2016!
