When New Year's rolls around, we all make resolutions to change in our lives for the better–whether it’s adjusting to our diet, creating a financial plan, or getting more organised. But one area of improvement in our lives that often gets pushed aside is our homes.

A beautiful and well designed home can make your life and your mood soar in ways beyond measure and can even fuel the positive energy needed to fulfill all your other sought-after goals. So with that in mind, let's establish some New Year's decor resolutions! We put together a list of five easy and inexpensive upgrades to freshen up your home and ring in the New Year right.

1. Paint

A fresh coat of paint is the fastest, easiest, and most cost-efficient way of updating your home. Try painting your living room or dining room in a fresh new colour for a dramatic change. This is especially important if you have white walls. White unfortunately gets dirty very quickly, so if you want to maintain that pristine glow, touch up your walls with a fresh coat. If you're afraid of going too bold, accent walls are a great way to get around that.

2. Add new lighting

Adequate and proper lighting really brings a room to life. If your space is poorly lit, it will seem smaller and more cramped. Brighten up your home with new lighting to make it more welcoming. Strategically place a few floor lamps in the dark corners, or make your dining room table glow with a row of hanging lights.

3. Update drawer handles and door knobs

Chances are, your drawers and doorknobs have gotten a lot of wear and tear over the past 12 months, and nothing dates your kitchen or bathroom more than old-fashioned and dirty handles. Bring in the new year with fresh handles and new finishes. Take your pick from bronze, brushed nickel, copper, or shiny stainless steel for a chic and clean look.

4. Rearrange your furniture

Are you working under a tight budget? Well don't you worry–You can get the feeling of an entirely new home without spending a single penny! All you have to do is rearrange your furniture. According to the ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, spacial organisation dictates the flow of good and bad energy throughout the home. When you move your couch and scootch  the coffee table to the side and it will seem like your living room has an entirely new personality.

5. Update your accessories

Since we know buying new furniture isn't always an option, you can choose the wallet-friendly way to spruce up your interior by getting a few new accessories and getting rid of the ones you're no longer crazy about. Try to focus on goods that you can swap from season to season, such as pillows, throws, window treatments, or artistic objects like sculptures. This small change in accessories will make a big impact on the way your home looks and feels, but of course, the other points in this list do the same.
