We think 2016 will be defined by establishing a sense of individuality, uniqueness and collecting items for your home that have local roots and sentimental value. Usually with the new year comes the attitude of a 'new you' – but we suggest for this season that you scrap that thought!

For this season, use the real you as an inspiration for the interior of your home – and start creating products and accessories that are unique to you. After seasons of mass-produced products, overwhelming sizes and clutter, we are excited to announce that taking it back to the basics is the theme for 2016!

We will show you how to maximise the concept of minimalism, maintain sustainable living habits and bring the outdoors inside your home – for a refreshing, clean and inspiring space that's all your own!

Maximising Minimalism

The concept of minimalism is defined by 'less is more'. Let this be your full inspiration for the year 2016.  We suggest that you sort through everything you own – and keep very little.  If there are items you must keep, find proper storage for them so they are out of sight, out of mind.

Decor wise, repaint walls to stark white or any other colour in the neutral palette – stick with this for bedding and accessories too. Allow for things that you like and make you happy – but in the end the cleanliness and organization of the space will be what keeps you most happy.  Remove wall art, except for a few pieces – here, the designer let empty picture frames lay against the wall near a makeshift, minimal closet which allows your outfit of the day to speak for itself!

Make It Sustainable

Living comfortably and living sustainably have now become rather synonymous terms – and we are proud! No longer does living green mean living out of your means or without convenience.  Think about the materials you use on a daily basis and break it down – start recycling, separating glass from plastic from trash – and if you're lucky enough to have a backyard area – do some research to start your own compost.  When it comes to something like compost, make sure to check with your local city or municipality offices – most cities have strict requirements and regulations on residential compost areas.

Within your home, think about the materials and furnishings you use. Consider bamboo instead of hardwood timbers and flooring.  Also consider bamboo for cooking utensils and technologies – it lasts long in almost any conditions and it's quite renewable as it takes about five-years for maximum adult growth.

Be smart with the electronics you install in your home as well – a television that has automatic shut-off, water filters that are cost-efficient and healthy and home temperature systems that maximise comfortability while saving you money on energy costs.

Last but not least, think about – solar panels!

Bringing the Outdoors In

In most European homes you will find plants in just about every room – and yes, real plants! There are several reasons for this – one, plants have a natural ability to clean and filter fresh air for your home, secondly, when it comes to herbs or aloe vera they are quite functional and usable, and lastly, they are beautiful.

If you tend to forget about plants or have a bad habit of letting them die, this doesn't mean you should never plant again.  You simply need to discuss with your local florist, or do some research online to find out which plants will provide the most benefits for you, without needing medium- to high-maintenance.

Tiles Are Going Geometric

Typical tile work is no longer simply solids and pattens on kitchen floors and kitchen back splashes! Tiles now offer just as much design and artistic detail as any other design features in your home! Geometric tiles will provide you with a beautiful artscape either on your walls, floors or back splashes and they are some of the easiest materials to clean and maintain!

Check out this stunning example by Nais, where the ombré changing of shades and geometric chevron pattern have easily turned this wall into the climactic center of the room!  For a bit more minimalist look – go with glass or subway-style tiles for a sleek and chic surface!

Mix Metals & Metallics

Will mixing metals and metallics ever get old?? We're most definitely not sure – but here we are, 2016, and we still love the look! This example pictured here is also by Nais (to see the rest of the bathroom, click here), the designer mentioned directly above, and their ability to mix semi-transparent glass tiles with a metallic light fixture and copper plumbing is absolutely amazing!

As you can see, there are several different textures and colours working in this space – yet all of them blend seamlessly!  For your next tile project, consider more modern and minimalist-style tiles and leave your space (pipes and all!) exposed for some clean transparency in your home!

Follow Your Favourite Interior Designers

Last but not least, find a designer that you love, and stick with them! This can mean anything from finding a local designer and doing a majority of your business with them – or finding your favorite, famous designer online and saving money to purchase central furnishings and accessories for your home – even if just once a year.

Sticking with a designer that you find completely on your own, and grow to love, will give you a sense of style and independence when guests ask, Hey, where did you get those wall hangings? I love them!

Personally, one of our favorite designers for wall art and home accessories, is Studio {Hammel} – check out more of their work here! We promise you won't be disappointed!
