The House Basaltic was designed by Grupoarquitectura from Mexico City. From street view the home is encased in concrete and completely closed to the outside, appearing to don a protective armor. The homes other face, which faces south and opens onto the garden, sheds it's concrete shield to let natural light permeate deep within the spaces. A very restrained material and colour palette is employed. The form of the home is comprised of intersecting volumes in concrete and basaltina. Inside, gray hues are set against the walnut woods. The moments of colour are found in the furniture and the lush gardens.

Intersecting volumes and materials

Stepping back from the sites corner, we can take in the two street facing facades in one unfolding picture plane. We can appreciate the drama of the intersecting volumes and the subtle nuance in materiality. The beautiful green vines grow up the lower volume becoming a living and changing part of the composition – time plays a an integral role in the experience of the building.

A discrete entry

The entry is tucked away – discrete and almost hidden. It is only the bright hue of the walnut door that asserts its function. The entry steps appear to grow up out of the worn and cracked concrete as as much as they bleed into the form of the home itself – taking one from the out-world to the in-world by linking the two very different sentences with one cohesive gesture.

The open face

Here, we see the homes other condition. The extensive use of glazing, wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, creates a seamless transition between inside and out. Patios, covered terraces and high-level balconies create wonderful spaces that occupy the threshold between interior and exterior. Gray and maple

In the main living space, tall volumes and open-plan arrangements create a feeling of openness. An opening creates a link between the upper level and this living space, enhancing the strong feeling of connection. The various hues of grey are patterned by the beautiful light that is cast into the space, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.

Bedroom with a view

The bedroom opens straight onto the balcony via full-height sliders. The timber floor is met by a timber wall – the result is a space which feels natural and warm. If a comfortable bed isn't enough, the loungers look equally comfortable – making the space more than just a retreat for sleeping but also a space to relax during waking hours.

The marble bathroom

The bathroom provides a final touch of luxury in this already grand home. Marble wraps every surface, bar the ceiling and fixtures. A skylight lends the space a welcome touch of natural light. For more bathroom ideas, take a look here!
