With some thought, a little effort and some inspiration, a meditation space is not hard to create at home on your own. We're here to help you with the inspiration bit and also to guide you in considering various options to find the most ideal place for meditation, as well as the most suitable design and elements to be placed in a meditation space.

The most ideal space for meditation is an area of the home which makes you feel peaceful and at ease. It could be beside a window, on the terrace, in the gardenbedroom or even living room, depending on where you're most comfortable sitting for a while. Once a suitable space has been chosen, the next steps are basically to modify it and design it so that it feels tranquil and peaceful. We hope these ideas will inspire you to create the perfect, personalised meditation space for you.

1. Find a nice spot with plenty of natural light

Most importantly, find a space in your home that makes you feel calm and peaceful. Ideally this space should also receive plenty of natural light. For example, a hanging chair on the patio could be the perfect space for you. However, you should also consider whether the space is quiet and if people will be walking through it so that you are not disturbed during meditation.

2. Make use of the pooja space

The pooja space could be a great place for meditation, depending on where the altar is setup. It is good to face something radiant that means something to you and puts your mind at ease. If it is in the living room as pictured here, you could place a comfy rug on the floor where you could sit cross-legged in the traditional lotus position, or if you feel more comfortable, you could always just pull out one of the dining chairs for temporary use. 3. Add greenery to your indoor space

If you choose an indoor space, it is a good idea to add lots of plants to the area as it will make it feel more peaceful and tranquil. Meditation is all about connecting with your surrounding and nature. Add an element of nature and your space will definitely become infused with harmony and balance. 4. Add an element of water

Add an element of water to the meditation space if you can. It could be a simple water feature indoors, a pot filled with water and flowers (as you would do for pooja), or a pond in the garden as pictured here. The sound of flowing water or even being near water tends to put our mind at ease and make meditation less of an effort. Also make sure the space is clutter-free, neat and organised as it will be very hard to focus on meditation in a messy space.

5. Make it colourful

Bright colours can help bring vibrant positive energy to your meditation space. We recommend choosing a combination of both warm colours such as yellow and red, and also cool colours like green and blue to create balance and harmony through colours. Though most of the yoga and meditation rooms tend to stick with neutral colors and lights for their calming effect, adding a bit of color will help to energize it.

6. Glass panels and room dividers

Glass panels and room dividers are excellent for creating a little niche space that is separated and distinguished from the rest of your home and also perfect for creating a meditation space at home with a little privacy. Glass panels combined with lights can also add a nice decorative touch which will illuminate the room.

7. Personalise the space

To make your meditation space more tranquil and personal, you can add things that soothe your soul like a Buddha statue, bells and chimes, crystal beads, affirmation stones or artwork that provide you with immense serenity and peace. Personalize the space by adding the frames and images of your loved ones who have passed away or some motivational speakers and their quotes. You can also keep the room painted white for its calming effect.

8. Interior courtyard or rooftop

Interior courtyards, rooftops, terraces, balconies and patios are also great spaces for a meditation spot as they receive sufficient natural light and are also well shaded and comfy, since they are an integrated part of the interiors of the home. Add a few incense sticks and some candles, and if you have the perfect meditation space which is in between the outdoors and the indoors.

9. Decorate accordingly

Create the feel of meditation by putting carpets, sculptors and portraits that help you feel connected to the other world. Pictured here is an example of a well-decorated meditation space with a tradition Indian swing, some traditional statues, a small plant and some brass ornaments. Don't forget the lighting as well!

10. Find the right chair

Last but not least, take into consideration your own comfort while meditating. Some people prefer sitting on a rug or carpet, while other prefer a chair. If you prefer a chair, it is of utmost importance that you select a suitable chair for meditation purposes which you will be comfortable sitting in for a while. It could be a proper armchair or even a fold-able chair as pictured here.
